German Pinot Noir in Bordeaux Country

Vinexpo is one of the most important trade forums for the world's wine markets, including Germany, which will once again demonstrate the international competitiveness of its wine-growers at this year's trade fair. For eleven years in a row, the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) has organized and financed a German pavilion.

The kickoff of this year’s events takes place on 21 June 2009. From then through 24 June, the German Wine Institute/Mainz will offer trade visitors numerous activities to focus attention on the 20 German exhibitors presenting their wines within the 400-square-meter pavilion.

According to the wine institute’s marketing director, Steffen Schindler: “Given worldwide increased interest in Riesling and Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) from German wine-growing regions, we expect many trade visitors at the wine institute’s stand in Bordeaux.”

From a German point of view, wine exports during recent years have shown positive development. In 2008, this segment of the wine industry was able to post an increase of 11.4% (equal to ca. 427 million euros) in terms of the value of wines exported. Wine exports showed double-digit growth, particularly in Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Poland and Russia.

“This year’s German presentation at Vinexpo will focus on white wines from the middle and upper quality segments. In addition, top red wines from German cellars will be available for sampling at the wine institute’s general tasting stand – a category that has been marked by enormous gains in quality and image during recent years,” said Steffen Schindler.
